Every landscape architecture firm relishes the opportunity to design a garden in downtown Charleston. OSD has been fortunate enough to design several, but this one stands out because of the unique, existing conditions in the rear courtyard. In this small space, the challenge was to create a natural transition from the elevated home to the garden below. Removing the handrails visually opens the grand stairs creating a seamless transition from inside to out and down into the garden. Ipe planters built into the steps helped soften the staircase, while traditional brick and bluestone paving details highlight the garden’s past history. We love to hear that this garden is a regular on the annual downtown garden tour.
OSD provided landscape architecture design, assisted in the bidding and negotiation of the construction contract and provided construction observation services for this project.
